Is Tagaytay
worth it?
Tagaytay is a ridge town about 600 metres up, looking down on Taal Lake with a volcano island in the middle of it. On a weekday it is 1.5–2 hours from Manila; on a Sunday it is 3–4. Go for the view, the cold air, and bulalo — beef shank soup with marrow — at Mahogany Market for ₱250–400. Two things to be clear about: the Volcano Island crater trek has been banned since 2020 and the island is inside the Permanent Danger Zone, and the cheap ₱1,050 tours rate 3.9★ against 4.6–4.9★ for the ₱1,800–2,800 tier.

What Tagaytay is, and what it is not
It is a cool-air ridge with a spectacular view, a bulalo tradition and some very good restaurants. It is not an adventure destination, and since 2020 it has not been a volcano climb.
The view. Taal is a caldera lake containing a volcano island that itself contains a crater lake. From the ridge — People's Park in the Sky, or any of the restaurants along the escarpment — it is one of the genuinely great views in the Philippines.
The food. Bulalo at Mahogany Market for ₱250–400 is the point of the trip for most Filipinos. Beyond that: Sonya's Garden for the set-lunch pilgrimage, Antonio's as the pre-Michelin grande dame, and Asador Alfonso in nearby Cavite, which took a Michelin star in the 2026 guide at around ₱6,000 a head.
The volcano status. Taal remains at Alert Level 1 and PHIVOLCS recorded eighteen eruptive events between January and July 2026. Volcano Island is closed and the crater trek has been banned since 2020. Boat rides on the lake operate; the climb does not. Check the PHIVOLCS bulletin the morning you travel.
The timing. This is the trip where departure time decides everything. Leave Manila by 5:30 or 6:00, be eating bulalo by 7:15, and start back by 14:00. Do it on a Sunday at 9am and you will spend seven of your twelve hours in a vehicle.
Tagaytay tours, compared
The rating spread on this route is the widest of any product in Manila. It is the clearest case on the site for not booking the cheapest option.
Tagaytay FAQ
How long does it take to get to Tagaytay from Manila?
1.5 to 2 hours on a weekday if you leave by 6am, and 3 to 4 hours on a weekend or a late start. It is about 60km south, and Manila's own outbound traffic — not the distance — is the entire variable.
Can you climb Taal Volcano in 2026?
No. Volcano Island and the crater trek have been closed since the 2020 eruption and the island lies inside the Permanent Danger Zone. Taal sits at Alert Level 1 with eighteen eruptive events recorded between January and July 2026. Lake boat rides operate; the climb does not.
Is a Tagaytay day tour worth it?
The ₱1,800–2,800 tier is, rating 4.6–4.9★. The ₱1,050 budget tier is not — it rates 3.9★, and on a twelve-hour day the vehicle, the guide and the pace matter far more than the ₱800 you save. A private car with driver at ₱3,500–6,000 split between four is the best version.
What should you eat in Tagaytay?
Bulalo — beef shank soup with bone marrow — at Mahogany Market, ₱250–400 a bowl, ideally early when the ridge is genuinely cold. Beyond that, Sonya's Garden for the set-lunch pilgrimage and Asador Alfonso in nearby Cavite, which holds a Michelin star at around ₱6,000.
Is Tagaytay worth it if it is cloudy?
Less so — the entire trip is a view and a meal, and low cloud on the ridge removes half of it. Check the forecast the night before, and if it is socked in, swap to a Pampanga food crawl or Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo instead.
