Quick answer
WORTH IT — genuinely, six of the ten best things here are free

Manila is unusually generous for a capital city. The three National Museums dropped admission permanently and are walk-in. The Manila American Cemetery is free with a photo ID. The Pasig River Esplanade, the Intramuros walls, San Agustin's nave, Manila Cathedral, the Baywalk sunset and the Okada fountain show all cost nothing, and the Pasig River Ferry is free with ID. That is a full day and a half of good sightseeing for the price of your Grabs.

The best free things in Manila

01

The three National Museums

WORTH ITTue–Sun 9–6 · closed Mondays

Fine Arts for the Spoliarium, Anthropology for the pre-colonial gold and the Manunggul Jar, Natural History for the Tree of Life atrium. No tickets, no booking, no queue. This is the single biggest surprise most visitors get in Manila.

02

Manila American Cemetery

WORTH IT9am–5pm daily · photo ID required

17,184 graves and 36,286 names of the missing on a rise in Taguig, kept to a standard nothing else in the country matches. The mosaic maps of the Pacific campaigns in the memorial are the best explanation of that war you will find anywhere.

03

The Pasig River Esplanade at golden hour

WORTH IT24/7 · bazaar 3pm–midnight

1.7km of riverwalk opened between 2024 and 2025, past the restored Jones Bridge lamps and the colonnaded Post Office. Between 16:30 and 18:30 it is the best free hour in the city, and the kiosks run until midnight.

04

The Intramuros walls and San Agustin's nave

WORTH ITFree · daylight

Fort Santiago costs ₱75 but the walls do not. Climb at Baluarte de San Diego, walk the restored Maestranza stretch on the river side, then look into San Agustin — UNESCO-listed, completed 1607, and the only building here that survived 1945.

05

The Okada Manila fountain show

WORTH ITEvery 30 min from 7pm

Designed by WET, the company behind the Bellagio fountains. It runs to 10pm on weeknights and midnight at weekends, it is genuinely spectacular, and it costs nothing. Pair it with the MOA bayside boardwalk at sunset.

06

The Pasig River Ferry

WORTH ITFree with ID · Mon–Sat ~6am–6pm

Thirteen stations, every thirty minutes, and it costs nothing. Escolta to Guadalupe beats EDSA on a bad traffic day and doubles as the cheapest sightseeing cruise in Asia — which makes the ₱900–1,500 Manila Bay dinner cruises look worse than they already do.

Questions people actually search

Free things in Manila FAQ

What can you do in Manila for free?

Three national museums, the Manila American Cemetery, the Pasig River Esplanade, the Intramuros walls, San Agustin's nave, Manila Cathedral, the Okada fountain show, the Baywalk sunset, the Pasig River Ferry and free weekend walking tours in Intramuros. That is a full day and a half of good sightseeing.

Are the National Museums in Manila really free?

Yes, all three, permanently, with no ticket and no booking — you walk in past a bag check. They open Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 6pm and close on Mondays and national holidays.

Is there anything free to do in Manila at night?

The Okada fountain show every 30 minutes from 7pm, the Pasig River Esplanade bazaar until midnight, the Baywalk and MOA bayside boardwalks, and Cubao Expo's courtyard in Quezon City. Fort Santiago is open until 10pm but costs ₱75.

How cheap can a day in Manila be?

Under ₱600 per person if you use rail and jeepneys, do the free museums and the Esplanade, and eat street food and carinderia lunches. Adding Fort Santiago at ₱75 and a Binondo crawl at ₱400–500 still keeps a full day under ₱1,200.
