“Manila” is one city inside a metro of seventeen, and the wrong choice puts 90 minutes of traffic between you and everything you came for. This page picks the right area for your trip in about two minutes.
For a first trip of two to four nights, stay in Makati CBD: safe, central, walkable, and the best restaurant density in the country. Stay in BGC instead if you are travelling with children or want everything to work like a rich country. Stay in Poblacion if nightlife is the point. Stay in Newport, and only Newport, if you have a flight before 9am. Do not book Quezon City before an early departure, and do not book “Manila Bay view, great price” without checking whether the tower is a half-empty ex-POGO block.

Metro Manila runs about 64–65% hotel occupancy, so you are rarely locked out — but the Philippines chairs ASEAN through 2026 and summit weeks compress central hotels hard. Book two to four weeks ahead and check for a summit before you fix dates.
Pick your area in one line
First trip, two to four nights → Makati CBD
Greenbelt and Glorietta on your doorstep, the best café and restaurant density in the country, two Michelin-starred rooms and nine Bib Gourmands inside the city, and a 20-minute Grab to almost anywhere. The trade-off is that the CBD goes quiet after 10pm — which is why Poblacion exists 15 minutes away.
Nightlife is the reason you came → Poblacion
A Michelin-starred restaurant, a top-100-Asia bar and 3am tacos inside 500 metres, plus the metro's only real hostel scene. Sleep above the bars and skip the last Grab of the night entirely. The live risk is phone-snatching on the darker side streets after 2am, not violence.
Travelling with children → BGC
Genuinely walkable pavements, parks, the Mind Museum, The M, a free American Cemetery ten minutes away, and shops that work. The standing local joke is that BGC is not really the Philippines, and the standing local advice is to sleep there anyway and go out in Poblacion.
Flight before 9am → Newport, and nothing else
Newport City sits across the Runway Manila footbridge from Terminal 3 — air-conditioned, covered, ten minutes on foot with a suitcase. Any 4am drive from Makati or Quezon City is a gamble against roadworks; this is not. It is also where the Michelin Guide held its Philippine launch.
Budget, sightseeing first → Malate and Ermita
The cheapest beds within walking distance of the National Museums and Intramuros, and the honest trade is the neighbourhood: the famous 1990s nightlife is gone, the KTV remnants are not what most visitors want, and it rates worst for night safety in the tourist core. Fine for street-smart budget travellers, wrong for families.
Five bookings to avoid
QC to NAIA is 90–120 minutes on a normal morning and worse during the EDSA rebuild. People miss flights doing this every week.
Sleep at Newport insteadThe POGO ban emptied whole blocks of Bay Area condo towers. Check reviews for occupancy and maintenance complaints before booking a cheap high-floor unit.
Filter for 8.0+ and 100+ reviewsThere is no tourist accommodation infrastructure in these districts and no reason to test it. Binondo is a daylight destination, not a place to sleep.
Casino resorts are self-contained by design. You will shuttle everywhere and see nothing of Manila. Correct only if a show, an arena event or the casino itself is the trip.
Isolated, fading, and a long way from anything you would choose to do. It photographs better than it lives.
Manila district
Rates in Metro Manila move in two directions at once: business hotels in Makati, BGC and Ortigas discount at weekends, while the casino and bay resorts discount midweek. If your dates are flexible by a day either way, checking both patterns is usually worth ₱1,000–3,000 a night. Filter for 8.0+ and at least a hundred reviews — it is the fastest way to avoid the ex-POGO tower problem.

Makati CBD — specifically the Ayala, Legazpi or Salcedo blocks. It is safe on foot at night, has the country's best restaurant and café density, and puts you 20–40 minutes by Grab from Intramuros. BGC is the alternative if you would rather have wide pavements and parks than street life.
Is it better to stay in Makati or BGC?

Newport City, across the Runway Manila covered footbridge from Terminal 3 — a ten-minute walk with luggage. Rooms run ₱4,500–9,000, with Belmont and Savoy at the cheaper end. Do not attempt a 4am drive from Quezon City or Makati during the EDSA rebuild.
Is Malate safe to stay in?
It is the weakest area for night safety in the tourist core, rated around 3.1/5 by travellers, and the famous nightlife it was known for in the 1990s no longer exists. Main drags are fine street-smart; the inner blocks are not. It works for budget sightseeing-first travellers and is wrong for families or nervous first-timers.
How much does a hotel in Manila cost?

Do I need to book Manila hotels in advance?
Two to four weeks is plenty for most dates — metro occupancy runs about 64–65%. The exceptions are ASEAN summit weeks (the Philippines chairs through 2026), the Christmas season, and Holy Week, when the city empties but the good hotels run staycation promotions.
